CODE: Center of Differentiated Education

CODE is an educational program for academically gifted and talented students in the HIckman Mills School District. A fundamental premise underlying our democratic way of life is a belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.  The gifted students in Hickman Mills C-1 School District represent a group of students whose learning style and thinking dimensions require experiences and instruction beyond the standard curricular mainstream.  Education is a vehicle by which every individual may advance toward his/her fullest potential.  An educational program for gifted students shall identify their unique capabilities, and provide extensions of learning which offer them opportunities for exploring those capabilities.  This gifted program is neither a reward nor an honor.  It is exclusive in its appropriateness for the educational needs of the identified students.

Students are selected for the CODE program on the basis of mental ability, creativity, and achievement. The assessment of these abilities involves a series of measures that require several months to complete.

Our CODE program is based on research and program development by Dr. Joseph S. Renzulli and his associates at the University of Connecticut.  Dr. Renzulli's work has provided the philosophical cornerstone for numerous gifted and talented programs across the nation.
