"Don't you forget about me", because now you can't. He's got a building named after him soon one of the most accomplished Kansas Citians. You can possibly imagine a very humble man, very well-known man, and he would argue that the only reason they named the school after him is they ran out of people to name stuff Alvin Brooks joining us in studio. How did you first hear they were doing this? And we want to let everyone know. This is in the Hickman Mills school District. This is long overdue. They call you a living legend and they will be naming the new school that serves, I think, sixth to eighth graders Alvin Brooks middle school.
Ruskin High School proudly celebrates the outstanding achievements of four exceptional volleyball players who earned Academic All-State Volleyball Honors! These student-athletes have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom, balancing the demands of competitive sports with academic success.
Hickman Mills South Middle School students had a special opportunity to learn about success, perseverance, and planning for the future from a dynamic father-son duo with deep Kansas City ties—former Chiefs linebacker Gerald Blanton and his son, Kendall Blanton, a two-time Super Bowl champion tight end.
The Hickman Mills C-1 School District (HMC-1) proudly honors two exceptional leaders who have shaped the South Kansas City community. The district’s Board of Education has voted to name two school buildings in recognition of Alvin Brooks and John Sharp, whose decades of service, advocacy, and leadership have left a lasting impact on students and families.
The Grand Opening of The Mill Café was a momentous occasion for the Hickman Mills C-1 School District (HMC-1) and the South Kansas City community! On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, families, staff, and community members gathered at the Real-World Learning Center to celebrate this exciting new student-operated coffee shop.
Wednesday morning, hours before the student-run The Mill Cafe was set to open, a pipe burst. Water had to be shut off temporarily, and crews were called in to quickly clean up.
Program coordinator Bethany Kelly called the situation a real-world experience, which is the whole purpose behind teaching her students how to learn to go with the (water) flow.
Ruskin High School has a new class called “coffee shop.”
Which makes perfect sense because the school district has a new coffee shop that is run by students.
Grand opening for The Mill Cafe, 10301 Hickman Mills Dr., is set for 8:30 a.m. Jan 22. It will be open to the public.
The students show up early, serve up cappuccinos and lattes, quiche and pastries, get paid and earn class credit.
Hickman Mills C-1 School District students recently showcased their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills at the FIRST LEGO League Regional Tournament, hosted by HMC-1 at Hickman Mills Middle School on December 6, 2024. This event brought together 41 teams from across the Kansas City metropolitan area, with more than 400 students in fourth through eighth grades competing.
From November 23-30, a south Kansas City delegation, led by Hickman Mills C-1 Schools students and leaders, traveled to Ghana in western Africa for a cultural enrichment and diplomatic event.
The group consisted of Hickman Mills superintendent Yaw Obeng, who was born in Ghana, School Board President Irene Kendrick, Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, Missouri House Representative Anthony Ealy, Ruskin High School Principal Dr. Ernest Fields and Mike Ross who teaches AP African American Studies.
The Mid-Continent Public Library has partnered with Hickman Mills’ Real World Learning Center to help students understand media literacy. This semester, students will design their own curriculum on the topic, focusing on important topics like checking facts and evaluating sources.
