Principal's Message

  • Photo of Principal Erica Hoard Dear Compass Families,

I would like to welcome you to the 20-21 school year.  I  consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to partner with you to educate our Compass scholars.  This is an unprecedented school year but the Compass Staff  is committed to making it a great and productive school year.

As we embrace the Ready to Learn Plan, communication will be essential to strengthening the home and school partnership.  Compass staff will utilize email, Google Guardian, Google Classroom and other platforms to ensure you stay informed about your child’s progress. I will also make myself available to assist you in whatever ways I can.  I understand that keeping you informed is one of the key factors in guaranteeing educational success for our scholars.

Our theme for the 20-21 school year is Seek to Understand.  Future events, whether virtual or face to face, will be planned to deepen the home/school relationship.   At Compass, we understand that in order for students to be successful, there must be a positive connection between home and school. Meet and Greet Night, Back to School Night, PTA, Science/Math Night and Title 1 meetings are just a few of the opportunities that will be offered to build a strong educational foundation together.

It is our mission at Compass to raise the academic achievement levels of all our scholars. Teachers will utilize whole group and small group instruction to differentiate the learning for our scholars. Students will be challenged to use critical thinking skills routinely.  Homework is fundamental in developing responsibility and effective study skills. Compass scholars will receive nightly homework to reinforce concepts learned during the school day.  Students will be expected to read nightly to strengthen their fluency and comprehension skills. We believe a good education opens the door to many opportunities. Compass teachers will work to develop the educational skill sets that will be necessary for a bright future.

At Compass, we believe in developing the whole child. This includes cultivating the social and emotional wellness of our students. We will emphasize school wide basics, BIST Goals for Life and the 3 B’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible).  Students will be encouraged to make positive choices and will be given the tools that will help them navigate the challenges that go along with being a student in the 21st century..

In closing, our primary goal  is to make certain that our scholars will be academically and socially prepared to excel to their highest potential. As Principal of Compass Elementary, I am fully committed to making certain that goal is accomplished.

    Educationally yours,

    Erica Hoard
