• INCLEMENT WEATHER PROTOCOL

    Dear HMC-1 Families:

The winter months and conditions are quickly approaching. Please take a moment to review our procedure for closing or delaying the opening of school due to snow and inclement weather.

Hickman Mills may close schools when weather creates unsafe travel conditions for our students, staff, families, and the transportation department. We will do our best to provide families plenty of notice before a weather-related school delay or closure. The decision to close school or have a two-hour late start will be made by 6 a.m., when possible, to allow time for the media to broadcast this decision prior to most students preparing for the school day. School closing information will be available on local television stations 4, 5, 9, and 41. School closings will also be posted on the district’s social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), sent to families through phone blast, and a notification sent via the HMC-1 mobile app.

Please refer to the start times below should the district choose to have a two-hour late start. LINC will not be available in the morning during a two-hour late start. Afternoon LINC services will be held as normal.

For the 2021-22 school year, HMC-1’s Executive Leadership Team has approved the use of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) plans for virtual instruction the first five inclement weather days. Five is the maximum number of days allowed for virtual instruction per DESE. Any inclement weather days beyond five will be considered traditional snow days, with no school for students. Parents will be informed when an AMI day will be used during inclement weather from the district, and student’s will receive classroom instruction for the day directly from their teacher.

    Two-Hour Late Start Times:

    • Burke Academy: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    • Compass Elementary: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    • Dobbs Elementary: 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Ervin Elementary (PreK): 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
    • Ervin Elementary (K-5th): 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    • Freda Markley: 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Ingels Elementary: 10:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
    • Millennium at Santa Fe: 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Truman Elementary: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    • Warford Elementary: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    • Smith-Hale Middle School: 10:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
    • Ruskin High School: 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

*Morning bus routes will also follow the two-hour delay. Please have your child at their bus stop two hours later than the normal arrival time.

It is important to have plans for younger children when school is dismissed early. In the event a parent/guardian is not or cannot be home, arrangements should be made for the child to stay with a friend or relative. Families should insist their children dress for protection against prolonged exposure to the weather as a safety precaution.

The decision to close school is always a difficult one. Every effort will be made to consider the safety of students, the safety of faculty, and the convenience to parents when making such decisions. Your cooperation and assistance is appreciated. It is always the parent/guardian’s decision to determine the safety for their child during inclement weather. If you have questions regarding school dismissal, call the school in which your child attends or refer to all of the communication mediums mentioned above.

    Sincerely,
    Hickman Mills C-1 School District
