Department of Academic Services

The Department of Academic Services maintains effective partnerships that build capacity in schools and expose students to a rigorous curriculum that meets college and career readiness expectations. As a department, we provide support to leaders, teachers, and schools so students achieve 21st Century competencies. We develop curriculum and support guides for teachers; and identify, disseminate, and model research-based best teaching and curricular practices. We work collaboratively with other departments to define K-12 grade-specific standards so that students will be fully prepared for the future; ready to compete successfully in the global economy.

Programs and Teams

Special Education

Dedicated to ensuring that every student, aged 3 to 21, receives the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our team provides specialized services to students identified under one of 16 categories, including Autism, Emotional Disturbances, and Specific Learning Disabilities. Through individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs, we deliver specialized instruction and related services, fostering growth and development in all areas of learning. With a commitment to inclusivity and equity, we strive to empower every student to reach their full potential, celebrating their strengths and supporting them in overcoming challenges to succeed in school and beyond.

Section 504 Plans

In accordance with Section 504, the Hickman Mills C-1 School District's 504 program ensures that school-age students with disabilities receive the support they need to access educational opportunities on an equal basis. Students qualify for the program if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, including learning, walking, caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, speaking, or breathing. Through individualized accommodations and support plans, our 504 program aims to remove barriers to learning and provide every student with the tools and resources they need to succeed academically and participate fully in school activities. We are committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment where all students can reach their full potential and thrive.

Health Services

At Hickman Mills C-1 School District, we understand that good health is essential for students to thrive academically. Our dedicated health services team, led by school nurses, plays a vital role in supporting the well-being of our school community. They ensure that immunization records are up to date, maintain comprehensive health logs, and administer medications when needed. Conducting health screenings and developing Individual Health Plans (IHP) tailored to each student's needs, they prioritize proactive health management. Additionally, our nurses are always ready to provide immediate assistance, whether it's applying a band-aid or offering first aid to students and staff members in need. By fostering a culture of wellness and providing essential health services, our team contributes to creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.

Parents as Teachers

Recognizing that 95% of brain development occurs in the first five years of life, the Parents as Teachers program at Hickman Mills C-1 School District is dedicated to supporting families with young children from prenatal to age five. Through personalized home visits featuring a research-based curriculum, families receive tailored support and guidance to enhance their child's early development. Group connection activities foster a sense of community and shared learning experiences, while comprehensive developmental and health screenings ensure that children receive the necessary support for optimal growth. Additionally, families benefit from access to research-based resources and information, empowering them to make informed decisions and provide a nurturing environment conducive to their child's overall well-being and success.

Responsibilities & Services

·       Personal Home & Virtual Visits: Our certified Parent Educators conduct personalized home visits or virtual visits with families, tailored to meet their unique needs. These visits occur regularly, ranging from as often as four times per year to monthly, depending on the family's requirements. During these sessions, Parent Educators provide support, guidance, and resources to enhance parenting skills and promote child development.

·       Monthly Group Connection Events: Families have the opportunity to connect with each other and participate in interactive parent-child activities, parent education nights, and small group discussions through our Monthly Group Connection Events. These events, held regularly throughout the school year, offer a supportive community environment where families can share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen their parenting skills.

·       Developmental Screenings: Annual developmental screenings are provided for children ages 6 months to 5 years to assess their language, cognitive, motor, and social-emotional development, as well as hearing, vision, dental, and overall health. These screenings help identify any developmental concerns early on and ensure that children receive the necessary support and interventions to thrive.

·       Network Resources: Our Parent Educators serve as a valuable resource hub, connecting families with a wide range of resources to meet their diverse needs. From further testing or evaluations for developmental concerns to assistance with clothing, food, financial support, and recommendations for family outings, our network resources aim to support families in all aspects of their lives.
