Our department offers a diverse range of services, including before and after-school programs, summer enrichment camps, and community partnerships aimed at enhancing the educational experience for students of all ages. English as Second Language
The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) department at Hickman Mills School District is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to students whose native language is not English. Our team is committed to equipping these students with the necessary tools and classroom structures to acquire and enhance their English language skills. By adopting guidelines tailored to English Language Learners (ELL), we aim to optimize the learning and teaching process, ensuring maximum benefit for students. Our mission is to serve as a bridge to mastery of the English language, empowering students to succeed academically and thrive in a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
School Counselors
Implement the School Counseling Curriculum to address social/emotional development, academic, and career development. Conduct lessons to help students achieve Grade Level Expectations (GLEs): social/emotional development, academic achievement, and career planning.
Responsibilities & Services
Missouri Course Access & Virtual School Program (MOCAP): Developed by Missouri to provide virtual online courses as an alternative instructional option. Catalog of vendors offering virtual courses. PLATO Credit Recovery, which is one of the courses available through MOCAP.
PLATO Credit Recovery: An online credit recovery program offered through MOCAP. Enables students to make up for missed credits and progress academically.
English Language Development: Support students in acquiring proficiency in the English language. Specialized programs and activities tailored for language learners.
District Assessments: Responsible for the alignment, implementation, and analysis of the District and State assessment programs. Responsibilities include using the district & state student data systems to measure student performance over time, provide stakeholders with data analysis and interpretation.
Title 1: Federal assistance program providing financial support to schools serving a high percentage of students from low-income families. To ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed academically.
District Professional Development: Continuous training and education for educators and staff. Enhancing teaching skills, incorporating new technologies, staying updated on educational trends.
STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics): Focus on promoting education and careers in STEAM fields. Hands-on projects, extracurricular STEM clubs, integration of technology in teaching.
Dual Enrollment Programs: Allows high school students to take college-level courses for credit. Accelerates academic progress and provides a head start on college coursework.
Character Education Programs: Foster the development of positive character traits in students. Values education, ethical decision-making, and social responsibility.
Technology Integration: Incorporating technology tools and resources into the curriculum. Enhance learning experiences and prepare students for a technology-driven world.

Responsibilities
● Mainstream Classroom: Prepare students to function successfully in the mainstream classroom
● Provide basic skills and instruction for those who have little previous schooling
● Offer assistance to those who are adjusting to a new school, community, or country
● To minimize language and cultural barriers and allow parents to participate in their children's education actively
● Increase English proficiency and student academic achievement in the core academic subject areas
● Attain English proficiency and meet the same challenging state academic content
● Meet Student achievement standards as expected to all other students provide linkage to community organizations that assist families in any way possible.
