Signs of Suicide Prevention Program
This school year, all HMC-1 students in 5th- 12th grades will be invited to participate in the Signs of Suicide (SOS) prevention program. SOS is an evidence-based program used in schools nationwide for over 20 years. It teaches students how to recognize the signs of depression and suicide in themselves or others and encourages them to reach out for help using the ACT model: Acknowledge, Care, Tell.
Through short lessons, age-appropriate videos, guided discussions, and reflection activities, students will learn:
- That depression is treatable, and that seeking help is an important and positive step
- How to recognize signs of depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or others
- How to ACT by Acknowledging warning signs, Caring for the person, and Telling a trusted adult
- Whom they can approach at school for support
Research shows that prevention efforts like SOS reduce stigma, increase help-seeking, and save lives.
