ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- School Resource Office (SRO) Overview: The School Resource Office (SRO) program at Hickman Mills C-1 School District plays a multifaceted role in ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and stakeholders within the school and community. SROs are sworn officers/deputies assigned to schools on a long-term basis and are trained to serve as law enforcement officers, law-related counselors, and law-related educators. They collaborate with the school and community as resources for safety and security issues, maintaining a visible presence to deter or identify trespassers on campus and addressing concerns such as loitering and traffic violations in school zones.
- Law Enforcement and Community Engagement: SROs are responsible for investigating violations of criminal law and enforcing the law while also serving as positive role models within the school environment. Despite their law enforcement duties, SROs are not school disciplinarians and do not handle investigations related to school rule violations. Instead, they support district-wide efforts to educate students on the consequences of unacceptable behavior and provide education on crime prevention and personal safety.
