The Men of Hickman Mills event is a conference focused on empowering Hickman Mills C-1 schools’ fathers and male mentors to take a more active role in the academic activities of HMC-1 male and female students. The district believes the family unit should work together to influence the education of students. In particular, the district would like to see more men involved because statistics show that student success increases when males are involved in a student’s academic career.
Research proves that the underrepresentation of minority males in urban public schools leads to poor performance by minority students. When education is not seen as a priority by minority males, minority students don’t have an additional push to make education a priority in their lives. When education is not a priority for any student, they become victims of the society around them, in turn-self-replicating the issue.
