Trauma-Informed Schools Initiative

Pursuant to Missouri Senate Bill 638, Section 161.1050, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has established the "Trauma-Informed Schools Initiative." This initiative focuses on understanding the impact of trauma on students and staff and integrating this knowledge into school policies, procedures, and practices to create supportive environments that help prevent re-traumatization.

What is a Trauma-Informed School?
A Trauma-Informed School:
  • Realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery.
  • Recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in students, teachers, and staff.
  • Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Seeks to actively resist re-traumatization.

District Suicide Prevention Protocol
Our district follows a strict protocol when a student makes statements threatening harm to themselves or others. Every school site is equipped with certified counselors, and District Family School Liaisons are assigned to support our schools.

Educational Programs and Partnerships
  • Signs of Suicide Program: High school students are educated about the risks and receive screening through this program.
  • Synergy Services Partnership: We collaborate with Synergy Services to provide mental health resources to our students.
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid: Many staff members have received training to support students in crisis
Encouraging Reporting
Students are encouraged to report any concerns, including peers threatening suicide, to a trusted adult at school.
