Tax Levy Recoupement (September 2018)
In 2016 and 2017 the Jackson County Assessor overstated the assessed value of properties within boundaries of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District. This overstatement required the current tax levy to be substantially lowered leaving the district with a significant budget gap. Due to these circumstances, the district must now increase the levy to reflect the correct assessed value. The district is seeking permission from the State Auditor pursuant to §137.073 RSMo. to set its levy at an appropriate amount based on the actual assessed valuation of property in the school district for tax years 2016 & 2017 to make up for the two years that the levy was lowered based upon overstated property values.
On Tuesday, September 11, 2018, the HMC-1 Board of Education held a special meeting to discuss the tax levy. Below are links to the Powerpoint presentation, given by Shellie Wiltsey, director of business and finance. Superintendent Yolanda Cargile, Ed.D.'s memo is also available.
The Board of Education voted to proceed with a one-year recoupment option. A meeting to set the 2018 tax levy once the school district has received all the required information from the State Auditor and the Jackson County Assessment Office. The date of that meeting will be communicated once it has been set.
