Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT)

  • Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020, families that qualify for free or reduced price meals at school may be eligible for a new one-time Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) of up to $302 per child (Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12) to help cover the cost of meals students have eaten at home on days that schools have been closed. Students can receive P-EBT benefits even if they have been or continue to receive meals provided by the school district during the school closure. If your child was not previously eligible for free or reduced price meals, but you have now lost income, you may be eligible to receive P-EBT benefits.

Meal Changes & COVID Testing - May 3

  • Parents & Guardians,

     

    We want to make you aware of some upcoming changes.

     

    Grab & Go meals will be available at all current distribution sites on Tuesday, May 5th. Starting on Thursday, May 7th, meals will only be distributed at Ruskin, Smith-Hale and Ervin. These three locations will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays for meals.

     

    Fresh Harvest Multi-Meal boxes will still be available to families on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ruskin, Smith-Hale and Ervin. These boxes include enough food for 30 meals. You must reserve your box two days in advance at https://hmc1food.org.

     

    We also want to make you aware of free COVID-19 (Coronavirus) testing taking place at Ruskin High School on Friday, May 8th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call (816) 404-2273 to schedule a test. Please bring a valid ID and a phone number where you can be reached. The tests will be provided by Truman Medical Center.

Letter - April 26, 2020

    Thank you for all you continue to do as we go through this challenging time together. Please read this email in its entirety as it includes several important updates. 

     

    Elementary and middle school choice boards for our extended Flexible Learning plan through May 1 are now available on our Choice Boards page.

     

    Teachers will continue to utilize Google Classroom to provide enrichment/extra activities for students as well as to communicate with students. 

     

    If you do not have internet access and would like a printed copy of the choice board mailed home to you, please Request for a Paper Copy of Choice Board

     

    Moving forward, on Fridays teachers will be available to support students in the mornings. Friday afternoons teachers will be working to wrap up the school year in their buildings. This change begins the week of April 27. 

     

    Also beginning next week, Fresh Harvest Multi-Meal boxes will be available to families on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Ruskin, Smith-Hale and Ervin. Update on School Closure - April 16, 2020

  • Parents & Guardians,

     

    As you are aware, Missouri Governor Mike Parson ordered all school districts to be closed for the remainder of the 19-20 school year. The closure is necessary to protect the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community, and to minimize the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).  All athletic events and activities are canceled for the remainder of the school year, and facilities, fields, and playgrounds will not be available until further notice. 

     

    Knowing that our connection with our families is crucial right now, we plan to continue to support our students and school community.  This support includes the continuation of our Flexible Learning Plan (i.e. virtual learning), social-emotional supports and Grab & Go meals. 

     

    We will continue our Flexible Learning Plan through the scheduled last day of school on May 22.  Please continue to this web section ​for updated information. ​As we look to the next few weeks of our Flexible Learning Plan, we want to hear from you about your experience with the plan. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey​. T​he survey includes a question about possibly moving to a 4-day school week beginning May 1. The survey will be open through Thursday, April 23. 

     

    What our teachers have accomplished in the past few weeks with your support is extraordinary. We know this has been challenging for parents and students as well. We are grateful and proud for all you are doing to support your children at home.

     

    We know that you have many questions. We are working on getting you answers as soon as we have them.

New Choice Boards - April 2, 2020

    You are amazing! Thank you for all you are doing during this challenging time. We want to let you know that additional work is now ready for students.

Meal Update - March 28, 2020

    Parents & Guardians,

     

    HMC-1 is committed to providing meals to students as we navigate through this challenging time. Beginning Tuesday, March 31st, Grab & Go meals distribution will change. Meals will only be available at school sites, including the Johnson and Symington Elementary buildings, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no meal distribution on Monday, March 30. 

     

    Unfortunately, we are no longer able to deliver Grab & Go meals through bus routes. This decision comes as we work to balance the needs of our students with the increased spread of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and the desire to keep our volunteers and staff members safe.  

     

    Meals will be available at:

    • Compass, Dobbs, Ervin, Freda, Ingels, Millennium, Ruskin, Truman and Warford
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

     

    Meals will be available at:

    • Johnson and Symington
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  

     

    Grab & Go bags will include lunch and breakfast items to last two or three days. Students must be present to receive a meal.

Choice Boards - March 26, 2020

  • Thank you to our students and parents for the positive feedback about the HMC-1 PK-8 choice boards.

     

    The choice boards are designed to include activities that students can do at home, with or without access to technology. We want parents to have the flexibility to choose the learning activities they are comfortable doing with students, at a pace that works best for the student and family. Although teachers may assign some additional lessons (extra credit or enrichment), we are not assigning grades or penalizing students in any way and students should not feel pressured or overwhelmed. We understand that grace, flexibility, and patience is what we all need most right now. Being a support to our students and families is our main priority.

Letter to Parents - March 16, 2020

    Dear HMC-1 Families:

     

    Due to the recent mandate of school closures announced by Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, HMC-1 is closing all school buildings and suspending all activities through April 3, 2020. This includes in-person instruction, extra-curricular activities, and LINC programming. Additional information will be shared as we get more guidance from local and state health officials. 

     

    I recognize the significant impact this extended closure has on our entire community of students, families, and staff. I also recognize the anxiety this may cause our students, especially our special education students who depend on HMC-1 for critical services and our seniors focused on graduation. Our team has been working tirelessly to set up learning opportunities, WiFi access, help with technology, and meal support to assist your family during this unprecedented time.

     

    We have many details for you below. Please read through the information carefully.

     

    Starting Tuesday, March 24, all instruction will take place through a Flexible Learning Plan (i.e. virtual learning). 

     

    HMC-1’s Flexible Learning Plan means:

    • Students will have access to digital materials and instructional activities (K-12) to remain engaged in learning while schools are closed.
    • Digital resources will be designated by grade level.
    • K-8th grade students will receive Choice Boards with learning options for each day.
    • Grades 9-12 students will receive coursework via Google Classroom, Discovery Education, Study Sync, PLATO, USA Test Prep.

     

    Instructional activities and Choice boards will be available on the Choice Boards & Education Resources page beginning March 24.

     

    We encourage you to help your student(s) access the provided instructional activities to continue his/her learning. These Student Expectations for Flexible Learning will help keep you and your child on track.

     

    Your student’s teacher(s) will remain active in their education and have scheduled, virtual office hours to answer questions and work with students. Please watch for communication from your child’s teacher(s) for  their availability.  

     

    Mobile Devices

    • On Friday, March 13, students took home their 1:1 devices (iPads for K-8th grade and MacBooks 9th-12th), as well as initial directions. 
    • Charging equipment for iPads were provided to all K-5th grade students who did not already have access to a charging brick and cable through their sibling/relative at the same household address (sibling attending Smith Hale). High school students have been taking home MacBooks since August 2019.
    • Students who have not received a device or charger may pick one up at the school "drive-thru" on Monday, March 23 between 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

     

    Internet & WiFi Access

    All Ruskin High School students have access to Hotspots via our partnership with the Sprint 1Million program. Thanks to Sprint’s generosity, they are doubling the data allotment from 10 GB to 20 GB per month through June 30, 2020. If any Ruskin student is in need of a hot spot at this time, we have a limited number of devices to check out.     We encourage families, where possible, to take the next step by ensuring students have access to the internet at home. Some internet providers are offering free, low or reduced cost programs and resources for families. A list of available internet providers and locations offering WiFi are available at under the Help section of our Flexible Learning web section.

     

    Meals

    Beginning Tuesday, March 24, Apple Bus will distribute Grab & Go meals every weekday throughout the district. This will be done using pick-up options at all neighborhood elementary schools and bus routes. More information will be emailed to you in the coming days. It will also be available at under the Meals section of the Flexible Learning web section.
