New Coordinator of Early Learning Programs Selected
October 31, 2016
On October 27, Jillian Meriweather was approved by the Hickman Mills C-1 School District Board of Directors to join the team as the new coordinator of early learning programs. Meriweather will be responsible for facilitating the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of District pre-K and kindergarten programming, resources, and staff development. Meriweather will also assist in the strategic planning, support, and coordination of the District’s early learning and literacy initiatives.
Meriweather's enthusiasm for early childhood education began while writing her undergraduate thesis – a comparative analysis of post-segregation education policy in Stellenbosch, South Africa and Kansas City, Missouri. After teaching pre-k and kindergarten in Las Vegas, she returned to Kansas City as a Manager of Teacher Leadership Development where she coached teachers throughout the Kansas City area. Her successful career has allowed her to hold similar positions for Teach for America, Andre Agassi Preparatory Academy, and United Inner City Services.
Excited about coming on board in November, Meriweather states: “I can’t wait to get started. Early education is my passion, and the HMC-1 program is still in its early stages of development. It will be an honor to aid in the continued development in the programs growth.”
LaTanya Franklin, HMC-1 director of curriculum and instruction, is elated that Meriweather is now a part of the team.
“We are thrilled to have Ms. Meriweather joining our team,” Franklin said. “Jillian's experience in early childhood education, coaching, and professional development will help accelerate our efforts to provide high quality programming to our early learners.”
Meriweather received her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard and her Masters of Education in early childhood from the University Nevada in Las Vegas. She has also participated in several presentations on a national level, highlighting such topics as “Social Justice in Early Childhood Education,” “Early Childhood Education Excellence Exploration,” and “Inquiry into Empowering Teachers in Urban Education.”
