Students to Interview Kansas City Mayoral Candidates
February 22, 2019
Symington Elementary 6th grade students will interview ten of the candidates vying to be the next mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. The students’ questions will focus on important issues that impact the Hickman Mills C-1 School District community including financial resources, health care, safety, neighborhood revitalization, and education.
“This is an exceptional learning opportunity for our students. It is a real-life civics lesson where they can highlight matters that hit home for them,” said Superintendent Yolanda Cargile, Ed.D. “It is also a great way for the candidates to directly address concerns facing families in our district.”
The mayoral interviews will be part of an Apple ConnectED - Community Project. Through ConnectED, schools receive grants to support educational goals through technology. Green screen technology will be used for the interviews, providing students the opportunity to use their tech skills. Symington is the only Apple ConnectED elementary school in the state of Missouri. The interviews will be viewed in classrooms across the district and posted to the district’s website.
Following the interviews, students and staff will vote in a mock mayoral election scheduled for April 1 and 2.
Interviews will take place February 26 and 27 at Symington Elementary located at 8650 Ruskin Way, Kansas City, MO 64134.
Candidates to be interviewed include: Alissia Canady, Phil Glynn, Jolie Justus, Henry Klein, Vincent Lee, Quinton Lucas, Steve Miller, Jermaine Reed, Scott Taylor, and Scott Wagner.
